A modern and stylistically flexible symphony orchestra, the Royal Flemish Philharmonic demonstrates an artistic flair which allows for a variety of styles – from classical to contemporary – in a historically authentic manner. Chief Conductor Edo de Waart is responsible for the orchestra’s main repertoire. Drawing on his vast orchestral experience, as former Chief Conductor of a.o. the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony and Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, he contributes to the unique character of the Royal Flemish Philharmonic. He works in close co-operation with Principal Conductor Philippe Herreweghe, who makes use of his specific background in his readings of (pre)Romantic music. Martyn Brabbins is Principal Guest Conductor.

The Royal Flemish Philharmonic is proud to present its recordings in three high quality series, each with its distinct character. A-List brings you the great masterpieces, interpreted by renowned conductors. Belgian Boutique uncovers hidden gems from Belgium’s Romantic composers. Cutting Edge documents remarkable works of contemporary classical music.

A-LIST
The A-List label aims to give listeners an exciting experience of the main orchestral repertoire, played by the Royal Flemish Philharmonic and conducted by Edo de Waart. Previous releases include Strauss’ An Alpine Symphony and Mahler’s First Symphony. Dvořák’s Eight Symphony is the newest addition to the label. When Dvořák premiered his Eight Symphony in 1890 in Prague, the audience witnessed one of the most beautiful symphonies from the high romantic era. This generous and brilliant symphony is not only a truly melodic composition, but also an original contribution to the symphonic repertoire. While in form it is a traditional four-part symphony, Dvořák demonstrates his refreshing manner of writing in every movement. Also on this CD is an adaptation of Dvořák’s famous American string quartet for woodwinds, recorded by the Royal Flemish Philharmonic Wind Quintet. ‘The string quartet is undoubtedly the purest form of chamber music’, hoboist Piet Van Bockstal explains. ‘This is, however, a brilliant transcription for wind quintet. The fresh and vivid sound of the woodwinds brings out the melodic richness of Dvořák’s travels through America.’
