A modern and stylistically flexible symphony orchestra, the Royal Flemish Philharmonic demonstrates an artistic flair which allows for a variety of styles – from classical to contemporary – in a historically authentic manner. Chief Conductor Edo de Waart is responsible for the orchestra’s main repertoire. Drawing on his vast orchestral experience, as former Chief Conductor of a.o. the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony and Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, he contributes to the unique character of the Royal Flemish Philharmonic. He works in close co-operation with Principal Conductor Philippe Herreweghe, who makes use of his specific background in his readings of (pre)Romantic music. Martyn Brabbins is Principal Guest Conductor.

The Royal Flemish Philharmonic is proud to present its recordings in three high quality series, each with its distinct character. A-List brings you the great masterpieces, interpreted by renowned conductors. Belgian Boutique uncovers hidden gems from Belgium’s Romantic composers. Cutting Edge documents remarkable works of contemporary classical music.

BELGIAN BOUTIQUE
Belgian Boutique focuses on major pieces from the Belgian orchestral repertoire. The Royal Flemish Philharmonic has deliberately chosen to widen its repertoire to include the musical heritage of the whole country, and wants to provoke the listener by
confronting works by different composers.

The second Belgian Boutique CD combines works by two composers from the South of Belgium. First there is the mystical, Wagnerian Sixth Symphony by Jewish composer Adolphe Samuel, in which he presents the story of the Creation. Then there is Joseph Jongen’s last orchestral piece, the neo-impressionist Three Symphonic Movements. ‘It is all extraordinary music, very special and spectacular’, conductor Martyn Brabbins explains. ‘You can really feel that Belgian music is situated somewhere between the French and the German repertoire. As a Brit, I find it extremely interesting to discover this unexplored repertoire.’
