The themes of the night and dreams, the sky, the air and the wind, as well as love and beauty, provoke another intimate series of conversations between two unique voices. "Varuna" features three neverreleased Beirach originals, with lyrics by Antonioli, a Scriabin prelude, several songs from the Great American songbook, as well as a suite of free improvisations. Richie Beirach has carved an important place in jazz history with his classically infused modern harmonic approach to the piano, and Laurie Antonioli's entirely unique & creative vocal approach fuses with Beirach to create a highly personal artistic statement. Of their 2005 recording, "The Duo Sessions," Concerto Magazine stated, “The quality of this record is almost unrivaled, and if we were to hear something better we’d have heard the new Ella.”
Fearless Bay Area vocalist Laurie Antonioli has never shied away from plunging into jazz's deepest pools. She's raced through bebop steeplechases with cult saxophonist Pony Poindexter, made her first record in a duo setting with George Cables, collaborated with Bobby McFerrin during his formative San Francisco years, performed and collaborated with tenor sax legend Joe Henderson, recorded a breathtaking duo album with pianist Richie Beirach and created a multi-national, post bop, Balkan Jazz recording just for starters. She's also a prolific lyricist and on her last recording "American Dreams" penned 9 of the 12 songs. With her latest project, "Songs of Shadow, Songs of Light," Antonioli plumbs new emotional depths exploring her earliest musical inspiration, the vividly confessional songs of Joni Mitchell. Antonioli is recognized internationally and known in the jazz community as the generous leader and Chair of the Vocal Program at The California Jazz Conservatory, where she developed a unique 8-semester program for singers as well as creating a venue for countless jazz vocalists to perform and conduct workshops.
