- The Holon Trio cannot be defined by any specific genre within the vast cosmos of jazz. Rather, they make full use of a piano trio's compositional and sonic possibilities without ever sounding random or chaotic. All of their pieces have a "Nordic touch", and Holon follow their flow with great clarity and structure. Intelligent humour on a musical level is just as important to them as the right groove. The melodic and the experimental aren't mutually exclusive, but rather they blend together to create an emotional reflection that is packed with surprises.

- M. Weber of the Kieler Nachrichten (Kiel News) puts it very aptly: "The pieces can have a latin groove, go for the heart with a seemingly classic baroque, experimentally self-deconstruct themselves, or describe landscapes of the soul with a virtuoso twist".
Holon – the word is originally Greek and means something that is simultaneously a whole and a part. So far so philosophically and scientifically good.

The three musicians, Povel Widestrand (piano), Mathias Højgaard Jensen (bass) and Luke Akintaya (drums), have taken this concept as both a band name and an outline for their musical cosmos. An intelligent and accurate choice.

"The experience of how you perceive yourself as a musician while playing music varies constantly and is influenced by many different factors. Your current mental state, for example, or what you had for breakfast. But most important of all is who you are playing with. Because playing music, and especially improvising, is really dependent on whether you have a reliable connection with each other or not; a mutual understanding, and a shared sense of the direction and expression which a composition and its interpretation should take. From the very first time we played together there was this immediate connection, this mutual understanding. Besides, we always have a lot of fun! Our musical intention is that each voice, each one of us, can express their artistic individuality. And at the same time we can create and share something new and greater together. In a word: Holon!" as explained by the artists themselves.

The Swedish pianist Povel Widestrand, the Danish bassist Mathias Højgaard Jensen and the German/Nigerian drummer Lukas Akintaya got to know each during their studies at the Jazz Institute Berlin, and decided almost immediately to follow a common musical path. These three young and exceptional talents also compose and develop their pieces together.

"We all write for the trio. Usually, someone brings a rough draft into rehearsals and we work on the idea together, shaping it until we have the feeling that we can adequately convey the composer's message and emotion. Sometimes it happens very quickly and there is almost nothing to change. But sometimes a piece develops a character very different from what we had originally conceived during the working process. In this respect, we try and stay very flexible and receptive to the ideas of others".

Such exceptional talent doesn't go unnoticed! The Holon Trio won the 7th European Burghausen Youth Jazz Award in 2015, and have had a scholarship from Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now (Berlin) since October 2014.
