Mozart’s string quartet output can be easily divided into two groups: on the one hand, the thirteen early works written by a teenager, and the ten “celebrated” Viennese masterpieces on the other. Not a single movement in this impressive oeuvre could ever be described as insignificant; on the contrary.

Mozart’s early string quartets are brimming with endless variety of imagination, with the pleasure of experimenting, and the sheer joy of music- making; meanwhile, each movement of the “ten celebrated quartets” (Alfred Einstein) is a unique masterpiece in its own right.
